Batteries for electric vehicles are in continuous research and development to increase the energy density, cycle life and fast charging capabilities. New battery materials are being investigated to achieve such requirements and the focus of this project will be on silicon. It is able to store 10 times higher the capacity of the conventional graphite but it suffers from volume changes during battery operation that limits the number of cycles you can charge/discharge the battery.
This project will look into self-healing polymer binders to accommodate the volume changes of the silicon and therefore extend the battery lifetime. These polymers will be based on polyurethanes and dynamic covalent bonding.
The project will focus on incorporating self-healing binders into battery devices. Furthermore, electrochemical and structural characterization of the binder system will be investigated to understand the self-healing mechanism compared to the state-of-the-art polymer binders.
Graduated in chemistry or chemical engineering.
High level of written and oral English
Additional desirable qualifications:
• Research experience
• Experience/knowledge in polymers and/or electrochemistry
